TTC Service Changes Effective June 21, 2026

Service changes for the streetcar system were effective on June 7 in anticipation of the World Cup games starting on June 12. See:

The main set of bus and rapid transit changes will occur on June 21.

The seasonal changes are described as coming both from reduced summer demand and limits on operators to drive the service. It is not clear if this is due to a budgetary decision about staffing levels, a difficulty in recruiting new operators, or a mix of both.

The spreadsheet detailing old and new service plans has been added after the “more” break.

Detailed Service Changes

Construction Projects

** Diversion already in place before the formal schedule change.

Diversions Beginning

20 Cliffside

Metrolinx construction on the Birchmount bridge over the Lake Shore East corridor will divert 20 Cliffside buses both ways via Birchmount Rd, Pinegrove Ave, Aylesworth Ave, and Highview Ave.

51 Leslie

The bridge across Leslie to North York General Hospital is affected by nearby construction and is only open to eastbound traffic. 51 Leslie buses will loop through the hospital southbound only.

94 Wellesley

City construction on Wellesley Street East requires 94 Wellesley buses to divert eastbound via Jarvis, Carlton and Parliament.

Diversions Ending

72 Pape & 325 Don Mills Night

The southbound diversion of 72 via Dingwall and Carlaw for Ontario Line construction will end, as will the diversion both ways of the 325 Don Mills Night Bus. Depending on the progress of Metrolinx work, these diversions might end before June 21.

Rapid Transit Changes

  • On Lines 1 and 2, the number of Service Assistance Crews will be “adjusted … due to workforce considerations”. It is not clear how this will affect service quality.
  • On Line 5 Eglinton, AM Peak service will improve to 3’47” and PM Peak to 3’56” with the addition of 2 and 1 trains respectively. A Service Assistance Crew will be added in the Late Evening to expand coverage.

Bus Service Changes

Many routes are affected by service cuts over the summer months. They arise from multiple sources:

  • “Extra trips that are scheduled to accommodate secondary school ridership will be temporarily suspended to coincide with the end of the 2025-2026 school year. These trips will be restored in September 2026.”
  • “… due to reduced demand and/or workforce availability during summer months.”

Some express routes will be completely suspended for the summer with partly offsetting improvements to local service:

  • 941 Keele Express
  • 944 Kipling South Express
  • 945 Kipling Express
  • 968 Warden Express

Service will be reduced on many routes and time periods. In the table below, the new frequency is shown in parentheses after the time period. Where the day is not specified, the change refers to weekdays.

Run As Directed Buses

Vehicle Summary

Note that there is a very substantial reduction in peak bus requirements both through reduced regular service and a lower number of “600 Run as Directed” buses.

Budgeted Hours (All Modes)

eBus Schedule Compatibility

TTC is adjusting schedules to take into account constraints of eBus operation.

Schedules at Malvern Division, Mount Dennis Division, and Wilson division will be adjusted to rebalance and re-tag AM swing runs as per Bus Maintenance requests to better balance between eBus, diesel, and artic fleets.

  1. Lots of Saturday “temporary” summer reductions.

Does Saturday ridership really drop so much? I’d have thought no.

And on the route past the market and distillery too!

Steve: The 121 has had a hard time finding its market in part due to infrequent service. I worry that a 30 minute headway will kill it off.

  2. So are most of these reductions due to the summer schedule and will the TTC likely increase frequencies back in September when kids go back to school and more RTO mandates take effect?

Steve: That will be a big test of TTC and city policy. It will be hard to claim they’re working on Ridership Growth if cuts outlast the summer.

And as for the 25 Don mills splitting that’s in place since the beginning of 2017 that was intended due to the line 5 construction, needs to be reunited into one single routing after a decade because I believe there’s no need to keep splitting that route. Also I would like to see 22 Cowell and 70 O’Connor merged into one route like it proposed earlier and the 32 Eglinton west extended to Pearson airport to provide line 5 riders a direct service to the airport from My Dennis station without having to use UP express.

  3. They should try connecting to the nearest subway stop by extending 121 to Broadview station first.

Steve: The existing transfer at Broadview & Gerrard is particularly inconvenient both because of the stop location and the absence of a bench/shelter.

  4. I too hope that the 121 bus service survives. It’s my go to for shopping at the St. Lawrence market and other stores. The route has tricky spots westbound along Mill St. and the Esplanade. Traffic on Front causes untold delays. With all the development on Cherry, one would hope that ridership will increase.

  5. Will the 91 school trippers be suspended during the summer months? Like the 91C (it operates out of Malvern) and the 91 southbound Eglinton via Sunrise?

Steve: According to the service memo, all school trippers are suspended. They are not listed individually.

  6. Sad to see no improvements to the LRT lines. I had hoped this board they’d speed them up and reduce the run times. I guess as media/hype died down on the LRTs being so slow, the city is now dragging it’s feet as usual.

Also it’s ridiculous that this whole world cup gets improvements, which is great, but daily riders are dealing with a summer of service cuts.

Steve: The only change is the addition of two peak trains in the AM and one in the PM on Line 5. No changes in running times.

  7. I really wish they combined the 35 and 27 into one route again. Or at least every other 35 goes straight down to Jane stn. The fact they made changes to 906 means they should have had enough time to evaluate 27/35 as well.

Someone mentioned the 32 being extended to Airport. I completely agree.

With it being an election year, I hope the service is reinstated in Sept. It will be a bad look for Chow to maintain the security cuts. [Steve: Do you mean service cuts?]

Also, as TTC picked a winner for the 200 hybrid buses next year? There’s such a backlog in bus production that if they take too long , they won’t arrive til 2028. Which complicates things for bus maintenance.

    Steve: Not announced yet.

As for service restorations, in theory everything comes back in September, but with the state of the budget, I would not be surprised to see some cuts made permanent. This is a real test for Mayor Chow – whether her emphasis on better transit runs into a rock of inadequate funding and staffing.

  8. Hi Steve, since Labor Day weekend 2025 the Kingston Rd.#503 streetcar has been a long(ish)-term replacement 503 bus with seemingly no construction (anymore) indicated at this time! Had noticed you referenced workforce availability on some other routes could this be impacting getting the 503 streetcar back up and running? Buses are a bit quicker but not always and with the amount of school kids that intersect with this bus makes for too many “bus trips from hell” for the rest of us! Any idea?

Keep up the good work Steve!!

Steve: I believe there is some internal debate about whether the 503 should return as an all day route, or go back to the previous configuration with the 22 providing night and weekend service. There will be a diversion at King & York starting in September, and so the 503 cannot return to its classic York via Wellington route until that work is done.

One major issue operationally is that although the 503 and 501 are both on 10 minute headways as streetcars, there is no attempt to blend service inbound at Kingston Road and the 503s can wind up running as pairs with 501s. The “demand” on the 503 looks bad as a result.

  9. Starting this past Sunday, June 7 and effective until Saturday, July 25, there will be some changes to some downtown streetcar routes in order to accomodate FIFA World Cup 2026 crowds. The “510 Spadina” streetcar will turn back at the Queens Quay and Spadina loop, therefore won’t be continuing to Union Stn. However, there will be increased service on the streetcar routes that serve Exhibition Place – the “511 Bathurst” and “509 Harbourfront” – which share track on Fleet Street.

Steve: I wrote about this in my previous article on June 7 changes.

  10. Austin J: Sad to see no improvements to the LRT lines. I had hoped this board they’d speed them.

I have been saying for decades that this streetcar/LRT technology is slow by nature but Steve and others convinced the governments that if we give them their own lanes, then they would provide rapid transit and so we did that on Spadina, St Clair, Queens Quay, Eglinton, and Finch but still slower than walking. Then Steve and other streetcar fans were saying that if we give them signal priority, then these streetcar/LRT trains will become faster than the Shanghai Metro and so we did that but still slower than jogging. Steve knows that he cannot defend this inferior streetcar/LRT technology anymore and so he will quietly delete this comment and that’s fine.

Steve: There was never a claim that LRT would outrun the Shanghai Metro. The problems with both lines are quite flatly due to design decisions by Metrolinx, City Transportation Services and the TTC. Toronto talks about being a transit city, but always makes compromises that undermine transit. We still have not seen schedule and operating changes to run the trains faster. Compound this with incompetence like switches that do not have heaters to prevent icing up, and trains that do not behave reliably in spite of being on property for years when they could have been testing, this looks like a project that was doomed from the start. It is most definitely not what advocates were expecting and supporting.

  11. When is the King Street pilot project going to be reviewed? This was supposed to be a one month pilot study but they quietly made it permanent without any public consultations on the results of the pilot project. Anyway now nearly a decade later, the prepandemic ridership numbers used to “justify” this are no longer valid as ridership has dropped drastically and so when is this farce going to be reviewed?

Steve: A usual full-of-crap comment from an anonymous defender of “Scarborough”. The King street pilot was intended as much more than a one-month pilot. It ran aground on the pandemic, and then planned upgrades kept being delayed by budgets and by competing construction in the area. As for demand, the King car is still quite busy as anyone who rides it can tell. TTC in its infinite wisdom has still not published 2025 riding stats, but here are some to show the level of recovery: 2019 (pre-covid) 91k, 2023 54k, 2024 61k. Continued growth at that rate would put the line at about 75k daily ridership by now, and definitely deserving of priority. Some of the biggest problems come from attempts to accommodate autos, sort of, with a confusing collection of traffic signals.

Yes the street needs to be reviewed. Rebuild the stops with proper loading islands and shelters (in progress, but at a glacial pace). Aggressively manage problem intersections like Jarvis and University where north-south traffic routinely “blocks the box”.

  12. Steve,

How come the 25 Don Mills isn’t fully restored to the original route instead of branches? Wasn’t it suppose to be temporarily because of line 5 being built?

Steve: I have no idea. Possibly they simply forgot, or they prefer the split arrangement because it requires fewer buses.

  13. So based on that budgeted service hours, does the ttc intentionally plan to boost service during the fall period?

Steve: If you compare the Fall 1 and Fall 2 budgeted weekly hours to Winter 1, you will see they are all about the same at 193K. The only increase in the fall is for construction-related hours. Note also that in the year-to-date figures, they are running above budget. That either has to be corrected in the remainder of the year, or Council has to approve an adjustment. Normally that would not be hard, but there’s this little election in the way.

I certainly would not count on any major changes in the fall beyond restoring the summer cuts.
