College-Carlton Construction Plans Summer-Fall 2026

Phase 2 of the planned reconstruction of sewers and track on College and Carlton requires 506/306 streetcars to divert via Dundas Street between Bay and Parliament Streets. A replacement bus service will operate on College and Carlton. This arrangement begins on July 26 and is expected to continue until the end of 2026.

506B/306B buses will run from Spadina Station to Broadview & Gerrard:

  • Eastbound via Spadina, College, Carlton, Parliament and Gerrard looping near Bridgepoint Hospital.
  • Westbound via Gerrard, Parliament, Carlton, Jarvis, Wellesley, Bay, College and Spadina

Note that there will be no westbound service on Carlton/College between Jarvis and Bay because the street will be closed in that direction in the work zone. One eastbound lane will remain open.

This phase of the work includes:

  • Reconstruction of the sewer and watermain on College between Bay and Yonge, and
  • Reconstruction of the streetcar track on Carlton between Yonge and Church.

In Phase 3 later this year, the work zones will switch with streetcar track replacement west of Yonge.

As with the King Street project described in a separate post, it should be noted that the work by Toronto Water is the lengthier of the two components. As the City upgrades water and sewer infrastructure that is over a century old, there have been many disruptions to streetcar routes, although track and overhead upgrades are scheduled concurrently to take advantage of the streetcar diversions.

  1. So, this means Wellesley is down to one lane and then Carlton will be closed? Wellesley is currently open westbound from Parliament to Jarvis, maybe further. So Carlton will be open eastbound. Amazing!! But Church St is closed Wellesley to Carlton. Do you see why City Planning is an oxymoron to me???Perhaps they should close Queen as well! Or maybe Dundas? This is the city I live in. It’s so hard to get around my neighbourhood!! If I go east or north east it’s ok. But to go where the action is – or to work? Bloody difficult!! But it’s only til say the end of December? Not like my ramp to the Gardiner, which might be back up

  2. I’ve lost track. Are there any east-west streetcar lines operating on their Normal routes?

Steve: 512 St. Clair, 506 Carlton (for now), 505 Dundas, 504 King (for now), 509 Harbourfront.

  3. Steve, will they add the north to east and west to south curves at Carlton & Church?

Steve: The intersection is not being rebuilt, only the tangent track to the west. It was redone a few years ago, and at the time they “forgot” to add the missing curves.

The work at King & York next year is supposed to include an east-to-north curve.

Though this will be useful, I assume they will not add a north to east curve @ York & Adelaide – which would surely be very useful for diversions.

Steve: There already is a north to east at Adelaide & York. It was installed as part of the work for the OL diversion.

I also assume there is no hope of the once discussed extension of the southbound track on York from Adelaide to King (plus appropriate curves) – which would also be handy for diversions.

Steve: No. That would require a reorganization of the lanes as they now are.
