The TTC will make several changes to service on May 11 primarily for the transition to summer schedules with lower post-secondary school demand, and to restructure service for a major construction project.
For details on the King/Church project and its potential effects on traffic congestion, see King-Church Construction and Traffic Effects. Affected routes are 503/303 Kingston Road, 504/304 King, 508 Lake Shore and 511 Bathurst. For details, see that article.

I’m happy about the return of the articulated buses to 939. I’m glad they figured out the rail crossing issue. I still think however the fleet could be better used elsewhere than on the 129B.

Could there be merit to the 503 Kingston Road permanently ending at Dufferin’s Gate or even have the 508 Lakeshore go to Distillery? Practically replacing the 504 King branches and such? I was thinking in the future possible routing when the Port Lands streetcar network could affect any Broadview station and King-Queen Street routes.
Steve: There have been various proposals for configurations of the King/Queen corridor, and the eventual addition of the eastern waterfront will make it more complex. Given that the restoration of Queen Street is several years off, and the waterfront east line easily a decade away, it’s a little early to be drawing maps.

I’m glad the 68 Warden is receiving more service, but is there any indicator as to how much service? Are we talking potentially a 68 every 5-10min?
Steve: Only occasional extra trips, not a major change.

That’s one load of hot dog changes for the 72 PAPE. They managed to convert the route to an all electric operation after 10 pm at all times banning the use of diesel buses. I guess the changes had the neighbors complaining over the noisy diesel engines roaring late at night.

What is a double step-back?
Steve: The crew of train “N” drops back to train “N+2” for the return trip. This gives them relief time of two headways, roughly. For one person crews as on Line 1, just walking the length of the train plus taking a bio break barely fits. in the available time without step-backs.

I’m Surprised that the 503/504/508 streetcars aren’t turning onto Adelaide form Spadina instead of going all the way up to Queen and back around.

What’s the reason for route 112 West Mall moving to Mount Dennis? That’s an extra cost operationally because the relief point is further away. Resulting in extra funds. Shouldn’t the TTC be trying to be more efficient operationally? That where they struggle the most every budget cycle.
Steve: It’s a question of how many buses fit in each garage, and which routes that garage serves. It is not possible to have every route right beside its division office. Spare a thought for 512 St. Clair which operates from Leslie Barns. Part of the savings of shifting this route to Hillcrest in a few years will be the great reduction in dead mileage and travel time for on street crew changes.
And talking about operationally efficiency, I notice a lot of TTC bus route to garage allocations don’t maximize operational efficiency, I would love to see an audit done on ttc over this. Routes 127, 26, 30, 189, 55, 340 should all be at Mount Dennis division because it’s closer, compared to Queensway garage. And route 45 should be at Queensway. And any extra buses that the 45 needs can come from Mount Dennis for shared operation.
And considering TTCs control center for buses is more centralized since the introduction of VISION, they should go back to that. Again to maximize operational efficiency.
Steve: If we’re going to play the game of shuffling routes for efficiency, you have only done half of the job. Which routes would you take out of Mount Dennis to make room for the buses shifted from Queensway? When the TTC eventually builds its tenth garage on Kipling (the city already owns the land), it’s rather obvious where that route will go. Another complication in all of this will be which garages have electric charging capacity, how many eBuses they have and which routes they are assigned to.
The operating budget is always biggest hurdle, road blocks to TTC service with the lack of funds from higher levels of government, yet I don’t see any effort on TTC’s part to save money or help with any efficiency. There needs to be a review on how TTC plans their operations.
And what’s the reason for 72 Pape to have electric buses after 10pm? I would be surprised if it has to do with complaints. Unless it’s the detour that it does just north of Riverdale Ave, as a result of the Ontario Line construction. Very tight residential area.
Steve: Yes, it’s the detour via Dingwall and Carlaw.
And lastly, were in the Month of May now, with no mention of the new permanent CEO. I do suspect it’s Greg Percy. It really shouldn’t take this long to announce a CEO. It’s not like the CEO has that much control anyways. The board ultimately calls the shots. If anything rename the position back to General Manager.
Steve: My understanding is that the new CEO has been chosen, but not announced, and is expected to start in September. Winding down their position elsewhere is not something to do overnight. I am very reliably informed that it is not Greg Percy.

New reserved bus lanes on Queens Quay E? Will these be installed this coming weekend? Because right now there are no changes to this beat-up road.
Steve: I was amazed that this schedule change went through when the City only quite recently approved the new lanes. It would have been more sensible to wait for the lanes to go in and see their benefit.
Updated May 7: According to the TTC’s website, the bus lanes are to be in effect at the end of May.

Sorry for a dumb question, but seeing the situation with 927, and around TTC in general makes me think that TTC would clearly benefit from more articulated buses. That said, I haven’t heard about any plans on expanding the 60ft fleet. Is that because neither New Flyer nor Nova Bus have a reliable 60 foot ebus, and hybrids are no longer an option with EPA 2027? What’s the general situation with artics?
Steve: No artic eBus yet, at least none the TTC is willing to buy. The LFS Artics 9000-9152 will come up on their 12th birthday starting this year, but it’s unclear what the TTC will buy to replace them, let alone to expand the fleet.

The 154 bus is takes too long for one bus to come and we have too much 116 and 86. How can a person wait for 25 minutes for the next 154 bus to come, especially in the morning rush hour. If a 154 bus passes you have to wait for 25 mins to 30 mins for the next one to come. And it goes right to Kennedy station and the 954 express is also limited. How is this possible please?
Steve: The 154 is a new route, and if it’s not working you should complain to your Councillor to get this fixed. (I hope your Councillor will fight on issues like this.) Asking the TTC is a waste of time because, sadly, they tend to brush off complaints.

Steve: I believe the idea is to have a consistent transfer point at Osgoode Station both ways.
Can you explain? Why is a constant transfer point of use or interest to customers? I doubt that many of us make transfers from eastbound vehicles to westbound ones or would be terribly confused by having to catch vehicles at different places.
Steve: Transfers to and from the subway, not to other surface vehicles. The 501 is already making connections there both ways, and this adds the King corridor routes to the same design.

I am not convinced that the uniformity of their plan is better than trying to reduce the huge number of vehicles turning and running on Queen west of York. I predict lengthy delays but we will see! If eastbound 504s used Adelaide from Spadina people could still transfer to the subway at Adelaide and University – a short walk to St Andrew.
Steve: I think it’s a toss up between shifting all the north to east turns to Spadina and Adelaide and leaving them at Queen. Anyhow, it’s the choice the TTC made.

I low key feel like 927 (and 900 for that matter) should be GO transit service. Their fleets have higher seats to capacity ratio and luggage racks, which will be helpful for avoiding standing load at highway speed.

Bloor at Sherbourne is a narrow, congested intersection with much turning traffic. Bloor & Sherbourne both have busy cycle tracks, with a large volume of cyclists turning south from Bloor into the Sherbourne track. And boom! How does this happen in when council has repeatedly endorsed Vision Zero? Is Transportation Services aware of this?

Actually, the Sherbourne bus never actually runs on Bloor. Is the layover on Sherbourne at Bloor? If so, northbound or southbound? I do see buses sitting for a while northbound. That does make an unfortunate mix between turning cars and bicycles.

Steve, just as one TTC track work and/or watermain project is winding down and entering its final weeks, another one is now ramping up.
The TTC tracks at the Bathurst and Queens Quay intersection are currently being replaced. The old concrete is being broken up (jackhammer out) and tracks removed; then new tracks will be laid down and new concrete poured. Later this month, there will be track work on Bathurst between King Street and Front Street.
The south end of 511 Bathurst route and the west end of 509 Harbourfront will continue with shuttle bus operation until Saturday, June 21.
This past weekend, a new TTC track and/or watermain project started. Streetcars are being diverted, and stretches of 504 King route are operating with shuttle buses. Also, the 503 Kingston Road streetcar route has been extended westward to Dufferin Gate loop.
Steve: Yes, and the first day or so of operation has been beset by other problems including the marathon on May 11 that forced east-west routes to break in two, water main repairs today (May 12) on King west of Bathurst, and a less than stellar beginning of service that saw packs of 503 and 504 cars, and many 504 buses huddled together at Wolseley Loop. As of 11:30am, there are still big gaps and cars running in pairs.
LikeLike
Perhaps it would have been smarter to loop the 503 at McCaul as initially prototyped as it would cut down on intersection movements along Spadina.
The added turning movements of the 504D buses at Broadview eastbound has made a rush hour choke point even more choked.
Steve: The 10 minute service on the 504 streetcar was considered inadequate to handle demand in the Liberty Village / Niagara area, hence the 503 extension. As for Queen and Broadview, there are still no red lanes, and the transit advanced green only works for streetcars.

Steve, the Bathurst-Fleet-Lakeshore TTC track work project has entered its final days. Recently, track replacement has been completed at the Bathurst and Queens Quay intersection. This week, track replacement is being done on the stretch of Bathurst between King and Front streets. The south end of “511 Bathurst” and west end of “509 Harbourfront” routes continue with shuttle bus operation until Saturday, June 21, with regular streetcar service returning on the next day.
Then the shuttle buses will be ‘deployed’ to the “504 King” route (actually on King Street) while “504 King” streetcars are being diverted in to Queen Street. That’s for the current King/Church watermain and TTC track work project.
