The Labour Day weekend sees the TTC return to fall schedules on several routes, the end of some construction diversions, and the beginning of another.
Subway Service
There is no change in subway service
Streetcar Services
A plan to improve streetcar service to a six minute standard daytime headway begins with 512 St. Clair, and is expected to continue with 511 Bathurst and 505 Dundas at dates yet to be announced.
The construction work at King & Church finished recently. With the new schedules, streetcar service returns to King through downtown, but the west end of the line will divert around reconstruction of King & Dufferin until Thanksgiving weekend.
The 503 Kingston Road car will become a bus with the route shortened to Joe Shuster Way east of Dufferin. The 303 night service will be suspended. On Kingston Road the 322 Coxwell night bus will remain.
The eastern terminus of 508 Lake Shore will be shortened from Broadview Station to Distillery Loop.
Bus Services
Lawrence Station will reopen to bus service allowing restoration of regular bus services. The 52/952 Lawrence service will no longer operate via Avenue Road to Eglinton Station. Routes 124 Sunnybrook and 162 Lawrence-Donway will terminate at Lawrence Station rather than running west to Roe Loop on Avenue Road.
The south end of 325 Don Mills night bus will be extended east from Carlaw via Commissioners to Lake Shore Garage. The east end of 385 Sheppard East night bus will extended from Meadowvale Road to Rouge Hill GO Station.
Some of the seasonal services will end on Labour Day including:
- The weekend service to Biidaasige Park on 72D Pape will end, and buses will return to the 72C terminus at Commissioners and Saulter Streets.
- Weekday service on 200 Toronto Zoo and 201 Bluffer’s Park will end. Weekend service continues.
- Service on 203 High Park will end.
Many routes see restoration of services reduced for the summer lull in riding, although there are a few cuts scattered around the system. A large number of school trippers are also back, but these are not listed here.
The remainder of this article details various aspects of the changes and includes a link to a spreadsheet with the operating plans for all modified routes.
Construction Projects
The table below is the TTC’s list of construction projects affecting service together with their projected end dates.

325 Don Mills & 385 Sheppard East Night Bus Route Extensions
325 Don Mills will be extended south and east to Lakeshore Garage to provide operators with a relief location.
385 Sheppard East will be extended east and south to Rouge Hill GO.

Lawrence Station Reopens to Bus Traffic
Construction at Lawrence Station allows bus traffic to resume standard routes.
- 52/952 Lawrence services will terminate at Lawrence Station rather than running south via Avenue Road to Eglinton Station.
- 124 Sunnybrook and 162 Lawrence-Donway will terminate at Lawrence Station rather than at Roe Loop on Avenue Road.
(Note that proposed changes to services at Sunnybrook Hospital are still under discussion as part of the 2026 Network Plan and they will be implemented at a later date if they are approved.)
Platform allocations at Lawrence and Eglinton Stations are shown below. Routes 51 Leslie and 56 Leaside which had used a platform remote from the station entrance will shift north to use the slot previously occupied by 52 Lawrence.
Note that the Eglinton Station map incorrectly shows a route “56 Avenue Road” in the legend when it should be route 13 (it is correct on Bay 10).

King/Dufferin Project
This project and its effects are discussed in a separate article about streetcar diversions generally. The original start date was to be early after Labour Day, but this has been deferred to mid-September at a date to be announced. One advantage of this change is that the Tiff diversions will be over and done with before the King/Dufferin diversions start. This delay likely means that the diversions will continue into the October schedule period which starts on Thanksgiving weekend.
Although the schedules are drawn up assuming King/Dufferin will be closed, routes will operate normally until this occurs rather than diverting around the intersection.
The route configuration is shown below:
- 29 Dufferin and 329 Dufferin Night Bus will divert via Queen, Shaw and King to loop east of Dufferin. The stop at Joe Shuster will be the last/first stop on their routes.
- 929 Dufferin Express will loop at Queen via Gladstone and Peel.
- 504A King, 304 King Night Car and 508 Lake Shore will divert both ways via Queen east from Roncesvalles and south via Shaw to King. The 504B King car which usually goes to Dufferin Loop will instead loop north on Bathurst to Wolseley Loop.
- 503 Kingston Road will operate with buses and will use the same loop as 29 Dufferin.

Streetcar Maps
The maps below show the daytime and overnight configurations of the streetcar network for the September schedules. Note that only 501 Queen remains operating via the Richmond/Adelaide detour. The night service map does not show the 322 Coxwell service to Bingham, but this does appear in the GTFS version of the schedules which are already available on Toronto’s Open Data page.

Fleet Summaries
The peak vehicles in use for September sits at 1,596 buses and 152 streetcars on weekdays. On Saturdays, the streetcar peak hits 158 vehicles. Allowing for 20% spares, this implies a requirement of 190 streetcars out of a fleet that will soon number 263, and 1,915 buses out of a total of 2,044. There is headroom for additional service if only the TTC had the budget and staff to operate it.

Carhouse Allocation

The Six Minute Streetcar Network
TTC hopes to provide service every six minutes on its streetcar network with a gradual buildup over the next few years. 512 St. Clair is the first route to see this improvement.
One very troubling aspect, however, is that St. Clair has extremely long recovery time relative to the length of the route, far more than one would expect especially considering that it has an almost totally exclusive right-of-way.
Recovery times of up to 16 minutes appear in the weekday schedules, about 25% of the round trip time. This amount of recovery time is more commonly seen on longer mixed-traffic routes like 504A King (Distillery to Dundas West). The St. Clair car definitely needs a review of its actual operating conditions.
RAD Bus Allocation
The TTC operates a pool of Run As Directed (“RAD”) buses primarily in the PM peak and evening. The allocation of these vehicles by garage is shown below. This is possible because there are both surplus buses and operators.

Budget Hours
This table shows the number of vehicle hours planned in the budget and scheduled. In recent months, the actual scheduled service has exceeded the budgeted level. Considering that ridership is running about 1% below budget, it is not clear what the effect of extra service and lower revenue will be by year-end.

EBus Compatibility
The table below shows the number of scheduled blocks (periods one vehicle stays in service continuously) by mileage as a measure of whether they can be operated with eBuses given their limited range. This problem is particularly acute on weekends when there is no mid-day lull in service requirement between two peaks, and many buses remain in service all day.
As more eBuses enter service, the TTC is adjusting schedules to create more short blocks at Arrow and McNicoll Divisions. The extra garage mileage and hours this requires is an overhead cost of eBuses compared to hybrids.

Temporary Service Improvements
Because the TTC has extra buses and operators, they will provide added, unscheduled service on routes with crowding or resiliency problems. The affected routes are:
20 Cliffside
21 Brimley
32 Eglinton West
36 Finch West
37 Islington
45 Kipling
54 Lawrence East
57 Midland
63 Ossington

Operating Plan Details
The spreadsheet linked here shows detailed operating plans for the September scheduled compared with those in use for August.
- 20250831_Service_Changes (Version 2)
The 322 Coxwell Blue Night always operated to Bingham Loop. The 303 Kingston Rd provided additional service when it was introduced. Without the 303, it’s clearly a service reduction from 15 min blend headway to 30 min.
Steve: Thanks for that correction. I will amend the article. For some reason I thought the 322 had been cut back when the 303 went in.

I don’t live in The Affected Area so don’t see it regularly else I’d know, but is the KQQR project complete? I see the King Car is still on Queen, but is that because of KQQR or that other “worker w/shovel” sign on the map?
Steve: It has been complete for quite a while. The King cars will be on Queen because of the project at Dufferin.

Damn! The 303 got cut? I benefit from that night streetcar route when I head to union station to catch my early morning bus departure for London or Niagara Falls!

Also is the 322 Coxwell return to Kingston and Bingham temporary and does the TTC plan to merge 22 Coxwell and 70 O’Connor into a single route?
Steve: Sorry, I fouled up in the original version of the article. The 322 already runs to Bingham. As for the 70/22 merger, that’s on the list of annual service plan proposals that are to be implemented when the TTC gets around to them.

Need a table of the number of daily trips for each bus route.
Here is an example from Vancouver BC.
Steve: From time to time I have published comparisons of headways for all routes and time periods, and plan to update this soon now that the September service details have been published. Raw trip counts don’t tell the whole story.

Steve, in your list of bus route changes: “104 Dufferin North” -> 105 (Spreadsheet is correct).
Steve: Fixed. Thanks for catching that.

I would like to point out that on the service changes section you put the 104 as dufferin north instead of faywood.
Steve: It’s the route number that is wrong. The change really is on 105 Dufferin North. Fixed. Thanks.

Hi there,
Do you think the TTC will be retiring all of the OG Hybird Buses before the september service changes starts? Like on Saturday August 30th is it the last day of service for the OG Hybird Buses? Thanks alot.
Steve: No, sorry, I don’t know the retirement schedule.

Why does TTC have extra operators and buses? They might as well implement the 2024 and 2025 ASP. Particularly the ones that aren’t affected by the Eglinton LRT. If you’re paying to have a surplus of operators and have the equipment, just implement the 2025 ASP. Or use the extra operators for RGS initiatives. Instead of the ad hoc extra service that will be cut by the time customers get comfortable with them.
Early this year , the extra operators were a result of the LRT operator still in buses. But now they’re properly staffed for the Eglinton LRT.
And has there been any updates regarding Mississauga transit taking over TTC routes. And YRT taking over any TTC routes? I thought that was suppose to take place this Sept? Or possibly this Fall?
927 needs those artic’s badly. Is TTC at max capacity for artic storage? Is TTC able to add more artic’s to their fleet if they bought more?
And with more Ebuses being added to the fleet, I hope some update to their usage and range becomes available.
Steve: The TTC’s allocation of staff and equipment has been rather strange, although I suspect part of this is the ongoing uncertainty about Lines 5 and 6 opening. Remember also that there are man bus route changes that will occur at the same time, and so some operators will be currently surplus waiting for improved but not yet implemented bus services. It’s not just those awaiting LRT training and operations.
No word on takeovers of routes, although I think that the last Local 113 contract might have put a stop to that.
There was an overhaul program on the artics that took some of them out of service. I’m not sure whether it has finished yet.

The 73 Royal York needs good service immediately. I had to wait over 25 minutes for the bus to Royal York stn.
Steve: There are several routes where the service is not what is advertised. The TTC needs to be much more honest about the gap between scheduled and actual service. There are plans to address this, but it will be interesting to see how long they take to have a noticeable effect.

Hi Steve, has there been any news on if/when the 49 Bloor West might be extended to Renforth Station as per the 2025 Annual Service Plan? It always seemed to be contingent on other stakeholders that use the facility. Thanks.
Steve: No word, but proposals for the 2026 budget include funding of all outstanding 2024 and 2025 ASP changes. Whether these would occur early or late in the year is unclear. I’m waiting for the Strategic Planning Committee meeting on September 4 to see if there or more details.

I would love to see an improvement for the route 160 [Bathurst North], in both directions. But mostly afternoon schedule. Most of the time either late, or no show then they put them on short turn. So frustrating. This route needs major overhaul.

Thanks, Mr. Munro.
First time commenting here. Concerning the overnight buses, I’m surprised they don’t just have a separate 372 Pape route at this point (maybe it could go up to Laird & Eglinton). Same with the 334; you’d think they’d split it off at Kennedy into the 333 Neilson. But I’m not an expert
Also, with the 385 extension, do you know when they’ll be adding the 386 route, and the 395 extension?
Steve: There is a tendency to run longer rather than shorter night routes both to save on scheduled “recovery” to make the running times come out to an even multiple of 30 minutes. Also to eliminate a transfer connection. A long standing issue with night routes is that there are no scheduled, protected connections in the system, and with unreliable operations, riders cannot be sure of how long they might wait.
As for the other changes, there is a proposal to fund all of them in the 2026 budget, but no implementation date yet. We will have an idea of TTC’s plans when the budget comes out and we can compare the amount of money added to the full-year cost estimate for the services. If they are only partly funded, that points to a Fall implementation.

Steve, the “511 Bathurst” route was operating with shuttle buses instead of streetcars (as originally planned) because an electrical cable which supplies power to that route has been shorting. The cable is located inside a junction box under King Street West and Shaw Street. The extra streetcars on the “511 Bathurst” route, which were ordered on advance of the Canadian National Exhibition (which closes today) was stressing out the junction box.
The delays and/or gaps between the arrival of “511 Bathurst” streetcars became more apparent during the mid-point of the Canadian National Exhibition, at Bathurst subway station and the Exhibition loop.
During the last weekend of the Canadian National Exhibition, people crammed on to the shuttle buses.
Is that junction box and the cable due for a more thorough repair job?
Steve: No doubt. This is the sort of hidden decline of infrastructure that bites the TTC. Imagine if this were during FIFA. The idea that there were too many streetcars on the route for the feeder system is laughable considering that CNE service today is a fraction of what once operated there with wall to wall service by PCCs.

I have a question. When is the 345 Kipling Night bus and the 373 Royal York starting and the 337 Islington Eliminated.
Steve: All of the pending changes from 2024 and 2025 service plans are to be implemented in the 2026 budget, dates to be announced.
Why doesn’t the 335 run on early Sunday morning? They should also extended it down to Marine Parade via the 77 Swansea Via Humber Loop. The 341 Keele could be extended to Sunnyside Loop or even to Exhibition.
Steve: The 35 Jane runs early Sunday. There have been several schedule changes in past months to standardize the hours of service of the night routes, and Jane still hasn’t been touched. As for an extension through Swansea to Marine Parade, I wouldn’t hold my breath. There is another potential Ridership Growth Strategy initiative that would start Sunday service earlier, but that won’t give all-night service to Swansea. Marine Parade is in walking distance of the Queen night car.
There is already overnight service to the CNE on 329 Dufferin and 307 Bathurst.

Hey Steve, with all the new 60xx series eBusses, if you were to make a guess, when do you think we could see some on the 135? I’ve seen ones on the 17B, 117, 69, 12, 24, 924, 954 & 57 more often recently, and i think my home route deserves justice!
Steve: I don’t think there is any particular pattern to where the buses go other than not on long blocks of work that exceed their service range. The 135 Gerrard has two buses out all day, and so it’s not a candidate unless there is a scheduled change off.

Not sure it will happen, but if TTC shuts down the 503 streetcar due to driver shortages there’s an obvious solution. Turn the extra bus drivers into streetcar drivers. It makes no sense to shut down a bunch of very costly streetcars for the smaller polluting buses. In fact I would call it stupid.

Steve, Any idea how the TTC actually implements and uses RAD streetcars? Are they based equally out of the three carhouses?
Steve: Scroll down in the article to the Fleet Summaries for carhouse allocations. As for how they are used, that is a bit of a mystery as they do not show up explicitly in tracking data.

Hmm.. should they make a bus route that takes baseball fans to the Rogers centre?? Could be an idea for a new route.
Steve: Can you imagine the number of buses and resulting traffic jam? And one route would not be enough to serve the many places people are coming from. That’s the job of the subway and GO Transit.

Steve, when are streetcars expected to return to the “503 Kingston Road” route? That route switched to buses on Sunday, August 31, during the Labour Day long weekend when the CNE was still on (running).
The route was extended further west to the Sunnyside loop to provide extra service during the CNE.
Steve: The Sunnyside extension was to avoid having 503s caught in Dufferin Loop, not for extra CNE service. Many of these cars didn’t make it to Sunnyside but short turned at Dufferin. The mode change occurred at the schedule change in anticipation of the King/Dufferin reconstruction that was to have started just after Labour Day.
Longer term, TTC is playing its usual games with short-staffing the streetcar divisions. The various upcoming track jobs buys them a period when the 503 fills in as bus service while streetcars divert. I would not hold my breath to see streetcars back untl the Queen-Broadview work is finished next Spring, and suspect there may be yet another excuse by then.
