Streetcars on Kingston Road

With the albeit brief re-appearance of streetcar service on Kingston Road courtesy of the 505 Dundas rerouting to Bingham Loop, and the holiday weekend, it’s time for a look at Kingston Road today and as it was decades ago. Parts of the street have changed a lot, others are very much the same.

All photos in this post were taken by me and should be credited if they are reposted elsewhere.

Photos taken on June 21 and 25, 2023

1966 through 1968:

My apologies for the similarity in composition of many of these photos from my early days. We railrans have a bad habit of taking 3/4 front views, but I picked shots to show the surrounding neighbourhood as it then was.

And I cannot resist including this photo of Peter Witt 2766 on a charter trip sitting on the tail track east of Victoria Park Avenue (now removed), possibly the last streetcar to poke its nose into Scarborough until test runs on Line 5 Crosstown began. July 25, 1976.

  1. Great pix. KR riders must be the most confused in the city. Bus or streetcar today? Who knows? TTC seems to use it to suit its needs, not the riders.

My uncle drove for years on this route and I would often get in his streetcar on the way to school.

  2. The TTC stopped running Kingston Road streetcars as far as the Birchmount Loop in 1954. Replacing the streetcars east of Victoria Park with buses.

However, the TTC’s Scarboro radial line, originally a privately operated line, continued farther east to West Hill until 1936.
