Route 506/306 Carlton will operate as a bus route east of Parliament Street for two weeks beginning late on May 25. Worn curves at Gerrard & Bowmore (between Coxwell and Woodbine) and at Coxwell & Upper Gerrard will be replaced.
Updated June 6, 2024: The diversion that was expected to last until June 6 finished a day early, and normal service was restored to Main Station on June 6, not June 7 as originally planned.
Updated May 31, 2024 at 4:30pm: On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 28, the TTC announced that the 506 Carlton route would be extended east to Woodbine Loop via Queen Street. This would soak up the very substantial unused scheduled time for trips through to Main Station. Although some cars did operate over this routing on May 28, many turned back at Broadview. From May 29 onward, all service ran east to Woodbine Loop via Broadview and Queen, returning westbound via Queen and Parliament. None of the cars operating off route, nor any of the replacement shuttle buses appear on the tracking apps.
There service diversion varies as work progresses:
From 11pm Saturday May 25 to 4am Monday May 27:
The first stage of the work will be at Gerrard & Bowmore.

From 4am Monday May 27 to 4am Friday June 7:
The second stage of the work will be at Upper Gerrard & Coxwell.

Hi Steve,
Thank you as always for the updates.
Since you are updating on streetcars, I thought I might ask you here.
The TTC had mentioned that the 512 streetcar will be back in “Summer 2024” without giving a firm date. Now that summer is so close, I still don’t see any update. Do you have any information about a firm date , or if this even happen this summer?
Steve: The construction project list that was issued with the May schedule changes says “June 2024”. The next schedule change is on June 23.

Is there a reason that the streetcars aren’t running to Coxwell loop? Overhead power off or something?
Steve: Good question. I will ask but don’t expect to hear back for a while. I suspect it may be related to capacity problems at Coxwell-Queen as a terminus.

Is there a reason the TTC doesn’t just shutter this loop? It seems like it’s the least useful of all the loops in the system….
it’d be easier (but, costly, I suppose) to just build an on street loop down to Eastern and up that little stretch beside the Harveys… no?

Looping at Woodbine or through the yard at Russell (if possible) could be alternates to Coxwell loop. This introduces turns at Coxwell and Queen, but there’s enough of that going on when streetcars are entering or leaving service. The biggest problem is likely blocking Queen St.
Interesting that they sent the Dundas car all the way to Bingham loop for a while, and now they’ve just given up. I am guessing that there will be some restriction on overhead power in the Gerrard/Coxwell area causing this.

Looks like as of today the diversion plans have changed and 506 streetcars will now be extended to Kingston Rd Loop via Broadview and Queen. I assume this is to allow westbound streetcars to operate on Gerrard between Broadview and Parliament (instead of Dundas), as well as provide a better layover spot in the east end.
Steve: Thanks for the update. I will amend the article when the actual operation matches what TTC posts. This does make a lot more sense. if only to soak up the running time.

Just an update to my previous comment, the TTC posted this notice to Instagram, although it looks like as of now, streetcars are still using the old routing. We will have to see what happens…
Steve: And on X/Twitter.
