Metro Morning June 27/23

On June 27, I was one of several guests on CBC’s Metro Morning doing “where do we go from here” pieces about newly elected Olivia Chow’s challenges as Mayor of Toronto.

The item was not posted on the show’s website, and so here for those who missed it is my own recording.

  1. Yes but you conveniently forgot to mention that you endorsed Josh Matlow who finished 6th with only 4% of the votes, looks like your endorsement is not worth the paper it’s written on.

Steve: This message is the fourth iteration of a comment left by a troll who posts under a variety of identities.

You conveniently forgot to mention (or possibly even to read) my article Why I Voted For Olivia Chow in which I quite clearly supported Olivia even though Josh would have been my first choice in a ranked ballot situation. Considering that Olivia is now Mayor-Elect, it would appear that the “paper” my endorsement was written on is a tad more valuable than you give credit for.

Of course my endorsement is not going to move huge numbers of voters, and so it’s a comparatively small piece of paper. It’s the collective value of a lot of small endorsements, many involving people just talking to friends, not minor public figures like me, that makes a difference.

  2. Thank you, Steve, for another set of wise comments. Are you scheduled for any future broadcasts?

Steve: These things tend to be scheduled on very short notice depending on current events. I usually post info in advance on my Twitter feed if there is enough time.

In my opinion, the two immediate priorities for Olivia Chow should be:

    1. Restore the TTC cuts. This was an explicit election promise. It also requires little study or planning since we will be doing what we have already done before.

    2. Put in the tax increases right away. Yes, everyone hates taxes. But those of us who are mature adults realise that if we want good things we have to pay for them. The usual right-wing claim will undoubtedly be made that the slightest increase in taxes on anything will immediately cause the sky to fall. Putting up taxes right away means that by the time of the next election, people will see that the sky did not fall. And they will be enjoying the advantages of what those taxes are paying for.

Josh Matlow could have been mayor if he did not spend the last 13 years alienating the people of Scarborough which is the largest borough in Canada.

Steve: Looking at the relative standings, no, even if Josh spent his entire campaign kissing butt throughout Scarborough (like so many others selling transit pipe dreams) I don’t think he would have won out.

And, as I have already said, I endorsed Olivia, not Josh.

That’s because Josh Matlow spent 13 years to do everything possible to alienate the people of Scarborough who constitute about a third of the electorate in the mayoral elections. I am sorry to say this but Matlow lost this election long before the first vote was even cast.

Steve: Of the 722,877 votes case, 139,270 were in the six Scarborough wards. That’s not one third by a long shot. Scarborough voters do not turn out proportionally to their numbers.
