Some Popular bloggers do indeed open their own message board. The big downside is that you really have no control over what you can discuss on a message board which is a lot harder to moderate (which is why many people maintain both a blog and a forum). It also adds to the cost, with increased web hosting fees (bandwidth, storage), message board fees, etc. I don’t expect Steve to open one, as he may seem content with the way discussions on the blog are going. And that he has ultimate control over what is posted or not.
Besides, this blog is one of the few areas where I am free to express my right wing opinions. I’ve been banned from several city related message boards for the crime of voicing said views. Just imagine if I were to go on one of my usual anti-union rants on a message board. Steve would probably have a hard time cleaning up the resulting mess, not to mention the many calls from others to ban my IP.
Steve: Yes, it’s a lot of work moderating the comments, but I think that there is a better quality of discussion as a result.
The interminable conversation on Metronauts about the capacity and demand on the King car is a good example of something I would have cut off long ago, but Mark chooses to run a fairly open arrangement (he’s using the same software as I am, just with different options set).
I have no problem with right (or left) wing views as long as they are decently argued, not just rants against someone or some group who are presumed to be the root of all evil. We may not agree, but as long as we’re civil and things don’t descend into a tit-for-tat endless loop, it’s worth hearing both sides of an issue. If nothing else, it forces all parties to think through their positions rather than taking the easy path of trashing someone.
And we thank you Steve, for your effort and correcting my real[ly] bad grammer lol. My WPM is … well I am very lazy with the keyboard.
Stephen, I have too been banned from many quote “Liberal” blogs. I thought blogs was [were] about sharing ideas, not political mumbo jumbo. You try to have a constructive argument and with the combination of lazyness on the keyboard and some ignorance, I have been called a “Stupid Conservative,” And that’s rated G the reality is much worse, it’s rated 17C. Don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of stupid conservatives out there, and yes, sometimes I wonder what in the world they are thinking. I am just glad Steve, doesn’t pre judge and let me try to make a valid arguement. Note I didn’t know what an LRT was until you mentioned it, and I further researched it on the “Interwebs.” Kudos to you Steve, thanks a million!
Steve: The post above has been tidied up a bit [grin].
Oh no!!! Conservatives!!! Ban them all Steve before they hijack your blog and turn it into an outlet for Mike Harris!!!! NOW!!!
Steve: Mike Harris and his apologists will get no time from me. They took the classic neo-con approach to government — cut funding so that the reduced base is the “new normal”. That has succeeded handsomely as we now see with an impoverished Ontario “Liberal” government forever putting off restoring proper funding for downloaded programs. We vote the Tory vandals out of office, but we’re stuck with the legacy of their policies.
Meanwhile, anyone who thinks Ottawa will increase transit funding in this climate is dreaming.
Well, I COULD be considered an apologist for Mike Harris, if only because of his ideals, not the way he ran the province….. A lot of friends actually consider me as neo-conservative (which I find just a tad bit extreme). Heck, even my wife and my family don’t discuss politics with me because they KNOW it is going to result in one of those large political fights akin to those now happening in our levels of government.
So be warned, Steve. The Mike Harris Apologists have just sneaked into your front door to cause all sorts of trouble!!!!
what the hell is a gravatar?
Steve: Those funny little icons/snapshots/sketches that appear beside some people’s posts on various websites.
